Life Update
Finally got the email I’ve been waiting for. First a little background.
Like most people I watched closely how the world around me changed under the threat of a now two year old pandemic. How different governments reacted to the health threat was a great indicator of where governments fell on the authoritarian spectrum.
“Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
– Benjamin Franklin
Life is filled with uncertainty and that can threaten our sense of safety and security.
I get it.
Most things will always be outside of our control and one of the best ways to hedge that uncertainty is to operate with ready to implement options like a plan B.
One of the reasons I moved to Mexico City was as a result of how the government here balanced the need for security in light of the health threat while respecting people’s freedoms. I made a choice to become a Mexican resident and vote with my feet and finances for the kind of world I want to live in.
My plan B includes having multiple places to live and work so I accelerated my plans to build a passport potfolio to expand my options.
Back to the email I was waiting for.
After almost nine months the Hungarian Embassy in Mexico City notified me my Hungarian birth certificate had been issued and I was now an EU Citizen. My third passport gives me the option to live, work, invest and borrow in one of the world’s largest economic zones.
Here is the investment breakdown:
Time Cost: 9 months
Money Cost: $700 USD including legal fees
Value: EU Healthcare Benefits, Free University for EU citizens, Visa Free Travel to many countries including the US, EU Employability, EU Lendability, Live and Retire in EU (Italy or France sound like a great places to retire 😍). Tough to quantify but the return for 700 USD is worth it!
As a result of the pandemic I added two residencies (Mexico & Liberland) and one citizenship. Mexico and Liberland Citizenship are a few years away but I am in no rush.
Ready for this edition? Vamooooooos!
One Wealth Beyond Money Idea
Minimize the top five regrets of the dying.
A nurse recorded the most common regrets of the dying and put her findings in a book called “The Top Five Regrets of The Dying”
Here is what they said:
1. I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
3. I wish I had the courage to expresss my feelings.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.
One of the biggest illusions we operate under is death is not in our near future.
Nothing can be further from the truth. Yet countless lives are lived under this fallacy. Tragic.
Take inventory of your life and consider what you can do to minimize these regrets starting today.
I am prioritzing staying in touch with friends algorithm-free and focusing on activities that make my life happier and meaningful. Investing in relationships is a two for one when it comes to the top five regrets of the dying. Score!
Beyond Wealth and Money
One of my favorite songs this week by Colombian artist Camilo “Vida de Rico”. I am inlcuding a version below with English translation. I heard it again the other day and it really embodies the Wealth Beyond Money philosophy. Enjoy!
